Fordyce spots on the lips: what are they?
Fordyce spots are visible sebaceous glands that can appear on the lip border or oral mucosa. They are a common benign variant and are not contagious.

What do Fordyce spots look like?
They are usually small pale, yellowish or skin-coloured dots and may become easier to see when the lip is stretched.
They are not acne, a cold sore or a sexually transmitted infection. A new, painful, ulcerated or changing lesion still needs assessment.
Does filler affect their visibility?
Filler does not cause Fordyce spots. A change in lip shape, surface tension or lighting may make existing spots more noticeable.
Lip filler is not a treatment for Fordyce spots. Skin condition is assessed before injections.
When should a lesion be assessed?
Seek healthcare advice for pain, ulceration, blisters, discharge, rapid change or another unusual symptom. Filler is not performed through active infection or broken skin.
